Why do students commit suicide?

Why do students commit suicide?

Today, I was visibly shaken to read the news with Headline as “Failing to score high mark, boy hangs self”. This boy expected to get 90% marks in CBSE board but managed to score 76%. This raises several questions which need to be answered.
1> Do they think that if they fail to get high percentile then everything is finished
2> Their parents exert undue pressure on them to score high percentage
3> They think that if they dont score very high percentage, they wont get admission in good college
4> They think that scoring high percentage is a matter of pride for their parents in the society
As far as the first point is concerned, let me state that scoring high percentage in exam is not a measure of success in life.
I was the 1st Rank Holder in school scoring consistently scoring high during my school days but now when I look back, I realise that several of my colleagues who were ordinary students at that time are much more successful than me in life. Some of them are big businessmen and some are high profile executives.
Parents who have not been able to achieve success in life pin their hopes on their son or daughter to fulfill their dreams. These parents expect their child to score very high percentage and pressurise them to choose profession of their choice even if it not of interest to him.
It is a question of demand and supply. There are limited no of seats in colleges but students seeking admission in college far exceed the number of seats.
So the colleges have no option but to start filling the seats starting from the highest percentage which may be more than 95%. If number of students seeking admission in college with score more than 90% exceed the total number of seats available then cut off percentage will be in excess of 90%. It does not mean that a student who scores below 90% is no good.
He can get admission in lesser known college. The student should understand that he goes to college to acquire knowledge and not to compete with each other in a bid to score higher percentage.
One can learn from history. Albert Einstein who is supposed to be the greatest scientist, the world has ever produced was a school dropout.
One should never make it a prestige issue. It will be suicidal.
Anybody who commits sucides for whatever reasons shows signs of depression before committing suicides.

Friends, relatives of this person should be alert to note the changes taking place in the behaviour of this person and take him or her for counselling before it is too late.
